HANANG LEADERSHIP CONFRENCE

Back in April of 2011 we had a district wide boys conference. Five volunteers from different villages each brought five teenage boys to Katesh town where we held the conference. We concentrated on goal setting, leadership skills, bee keeping, sports and games, etc. We also watched Rambo 1 and Rambo 3. Pretty sure that is all the kids remember but I know they had a blast.

Tanzania Reads Fundraiser Books Books and More Books

Here we go folks calling all wallets we need your help over here. We are on a mission to bring textbooks to Masqaroda Secondary School. I was an English teacher at the school last term and I can not tell you how bad they need your help. Imagine trying to graduate High School without any textbooks and you can begin to understand the struggles these students and teachers have. The students are hard workers and have the desire to learn please do what you can to assist them. Our budget is calling for just over $1800 our goal is to have many small donations as opposed to large donations from just a few people. So please reach deep in those pockets and find the time to go to the link below and donate $5-$10 you have no idea how far that can go!

Form 3 students

"In the teaching and learning process to have enough books is very important. Books help very much in getting enough material to teach, making references where needed. They can also help in developing good listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. If we will get those books they will help much in improving student’s ability in understanding on what they have to learn. Thank you very much for all your contributions.”

Marmo Nade – Teacher Geography, Kiswahili, and History
Ester Ezekiel – Teacher English and Geography

“Now we only have a few textbooks it is very hard for the students to learn and understand their subjects. If we receive more books it will improve our performance on national exams. It will stimulate the students to study hard and improve their individual results.”

Frederick Seho Massay, Academic Prefect Form 3

“Our school has very few textbooks. It is impossible for a student to take a book home to study hard because there are few books at school. If we can receive more books we can study at home and in small groups after school.”

Paulina Paulo Safari, School Secretary From 2

85% of contributions will be utilized to purchase over 300 books from wholesale publishers here in Tanzania the remaining 15% of your contributions will be used to improve the schools cooking facilities.

The kitchen is very close to being completed all that remains is some window and door framing and roofing. We also plan to build two individual fuel efficient stoves inside. The new fuel efficient wood burning stoves will drastically decrease the amount of wood used on a daily basis. The saved costs on timber in the food budget can open the door for a wider variety of food and more nutritious meals for students.

Thank you to all that make contributions we will put the money to good use!

Random Shots of Masqaroda

Shots from my village.
Each sack ways over 150 pounds

It took them all day to load this truck that was heading to Kenya.

Shebbi

Unfortunately this guy was killed by a cobra in his farm a couple days after this was taken. RIP Mzee
Dana another PCV from the area came out to my ville for the day to help me take some GPS readings for a water project I'm working on. Try explaining what a GPS is to people who don't have electricity.

Kweli Center Tree Nursery

An English Medium School in Katesh run by some friends of ours from Ohio approached me to help them with a Tree Nursery to make a perimeter around there school grounds. Having no experience in tree nurseries I gave it my best shot. We were sucessful in teaching about deforestation, producing some seedlings, and having a good time but it all went to hell when we tried to transplant them. But the kids are cute so I thought I would put these pics up anyway.

Double dig those beds

Wanawake wanaweza (women can too!)

I swear we produced some seedlings but I don't knw if even two survived. We'll have to try again.

My program director came to visit my site back in September to give me some guidance on a project my villagers and I are starting soon baring some construction obstacles.  It was great to have Brian in the village I got some great advice and Alli and I also got to accompany him on several site visits for potential new volunteers in Singida and Katesh.
